Vegetarian Week 2022

With almost everyone at Let’s Sanitise being either vegetarian or vegan, vegetarian week is extremely important to us.

 

Help tackle the climate crisis! 

National Vegetarian Week is the Vegetarian Society’s flagship annual campaign held each May. This year, as well as inviting people to try more plant-based food, there’s an environmental focus to the week.

Our wildlife is under threat due to climate change and eating vegetarian is one of the simplest things to do to reduce our own carbon emissions and have less impact on our wildlife, whose homes are affected by the climate crisis.

The National Food Strategy states that we should be eating 30% less meat by 2030. This can be achieved by having just two meat-free days a week!

 

Benefits of a vegetarian diet 

A well rounded vegetarian diet is naturally lower in saturated fat and higher fibre. This can help lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of heard disease.

It also has environmental benefits. Meat farming has a huge impact on ecological systems and takes up a vast amount of land, this can result is deforestation due to agriculture.

Halloumi burgers are a great alternative to having meat. Simply swap out the beef patty for halloumi and keep all the extras including: tomato, lettuce and salsa.

Beyond meat is taking the world and restaurants by storm. They offer vegetarian burgers, mince, meatballs, sausages and more, there’s substitutes for every occasion.

 

Beyond Meat Bolognese Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large yellow onion, chopped
  • 2 medium carrots, chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • ¾ cup red wine (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seed
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 Beyond Meat Plant Based Ground
  • 4 cloves garlic, crushed and chopped
  • 28 ounce can crushed tomatoes

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. In a medium to large stock pot over medium heat, add the olive oil, onion, carrots, and celery and sauté for 10-20 minutes until soften. Add the tomato paste and deglaze the pan with the wine. If not using wine, use water or vegetable stock.
  2. Add the fennel seed, oregano, and Beyond Meat Plant Based Ground. Using a wooden spoon, break it up and stir to incorporate. Add the crushed and chopped garlic at this point - I like to add the garlic later in the recipe to avoid burning and it developing a bitter flavor.
  3. Once the plant based ground is incorporated, add the crushed tomatoes, stir and reduce heat to the lowest possible. Cover for the first 30-45 minutes, slowly simmering.
  4. Serve with your choice of pasta!
