Pride Month 2022

June is celebrated as pride month in honour of the Stonewall riots in June 1969. Pride is a celebration across the globe of people coming together in love and friendship, to show how far LGBTQ+ rights have come, and how in some place's there is still work to be done.

Parades are a common feature of pride month, including street parties, community events, public speaking and educations sessions which are all covered by mainstream media and attract millions of participants.

What were the Stonewall Riots?

Police Stonewall Inn - a gay bar in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, the LGBT community held a series of spontaneous and often violent demonstrations in response to a police raid that began in the early hours of 28th June 1969.

Before the riots and Stonewall, police raids targeting gay bars were a common occurrence where the N.Y. State Liquor Authority would often refuse to give liquor licenses to bars catering to gay customers.

Who started the June Celebration?

Brenda Howard, known as the “Mother of Pride” coordinated the first LGBT Pride march as well as sparking the idea for a week of events around pride, developing the annual LGBTQ+ celebrations held every June.
