Why is lavender calming?

Lavender can be seen as extremely effective when used within health care. Studies have found that it has reduced anxiety in dental patients as well as reducing anxiety during labour. It can even be used to improve the physical and mental state of young mothers when used in aromatherapy massage.

Studies have found lavender aromatherapy to have a beneficial effect on insomnia and depression in young females. Another study found it to improve sleep quality, depression and stress levels in older adults. A third study highlighted lavender has an anti anxiety and anti depressive effect. If taken orally for 6 weeks it was shown to improve the general mental health and quality of life in 50 patients with PTSD.
Lavender has a long term association with sleep and treating insomnia due to its calming qualities. A study on midlife women supports this, finding that 20 minutes of lavender inhalation can improve sleep quality.
