Summer Solstice 2022

Temperatures are rising and the days are getting longer so that can only mean one thing: summer is upon us. We’re exactly halfway through the year, and midway between the two equinoxes. The summer solstice marks the first day of summer, and for many people around the world (especially in the UK), it’s a time to celebrate.

When is the summer solstice 2022?

Tuesday 21st June 2022 at the very precise time of 10:13am BST. It last just over 3 months, ending on Friday, 23rd September.

What is the summer solstice?

It’s when the sun reaches its highest point in the sky, resulting the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

Solstices and equinoxes are the result of the Earth’s tilt and its orbit around the sun.

You must be wondering… why doesn’t this mean June is the hottest month of the year? This isn’t always the case, where the hottest day typically occurs during July or August in the northern hemisphere. This is due to the land temperatures still being relatively cool from spring. Our seasons are therefore subject to something called ‘seasonal temperature lag’ because it takes a while for the maximum heating effect on air temperatures to occur.
